Brain training for cyber gaming

Playing video games is not just for fun anymore. Video gaming competitions are emerging as a way for top gamers to make a living, some taking home 6-figure salaries by playing games like WarCraft.

Last weekend, Seattle hosted the World Cyber Games, an international competition where the world’s best players compete for gaming glory and cash prizes. From ZDNet Technology News:

“The goal is to one day be recognized as on par with the Olympics or the World Cup,” said Michael Arzt, senior vice president with the World Cyber Games.

Though we haven’t directly studied this, some people believe Lumosity improves your ability to play video games, and maybe a useful training tool for serious gamers. DigitalDingus, for example, recently discussed how quicker thinking and hand-eye coordination exercised by our training program could enhance gaming abilities. Excellent visual attention is another key element of adroit gaming, and is enhanced by Lumosity brain training.

Any gamers out there using Lumosity to sharpen your skills?

I originally began my studies into better brain function because I wanted to examine how people improve at things, particularly games, and along the way found Lumosity; I have to say, I think brain training has helped!

Glad to hear it, Paul. I also came across some poker players using Lumosity to increase their winnings. This is interesting because it’s a very quantifiable outcome, i.e. the dollars won should ultimately reflect your ability once there’s enough data to deal with variance, or “luck.”

    Hey there!

I just completed my trial and signed up on a monthly plan and I must say that Lumosity is great ;) I am not sure if I have noticed any improvement, but as I am a very competitive person I can’t get enough of the games and continually having to improve my score :P
I do play both poker and Go (an acient board game) and I think that by having done brain training here has really improved my ability to stay focues and patient.

    Cheers,
    Petteri
